Highly productive animals require a large amount of energy for maintenance, growth, and milk or egg production. They can absorb this energy from nutrients like fat, carbohydrates and sugars.
In the case of both dairy cattle and sows, their energy demand rises above their energy absorption at the start of lactation. This produces an energy deficit (negative energy balance) that is compensated for by calling on reserves. This may result in reduced fertility, lowered resistance and ketosis. This negative energy balance can be prevented through the provision of an energy-rich feed.
